抗日战争期间，在东北三省，我党领导的东北抗日队伍与日军进行艰苦卓绝的斗争。日军视抗日队伍领袖杨震山司令为最大敌人，认为只要消灭了杨震山，东北就会太平。由于叛徒告密，杨震山司令壮烈牺牲，日寇以其首级为战利品，打击抗日队伍和东北民众的抗日斗志，妄想从精神上彻底击垮人们的抗日意志。抗日战士杨保中决心为义父报仇，带领少数几个战士，在敌强我弱的情况下，突破重重绝境，做出惊人的壮举，用生命的代价和顽强的意志夺回了尊严。同时，在这场夺回英雄“遗首”的战斗中，抗日战士发动广大爱国志士、民间团体，唤起了东北各种势力的民族情感，地方武装及普通民众纷纷与日寇展开英勇不屈的抗争，惩罚了叛徒，夺回了首级，重创了侵略者。
